DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND FILM

VACANCY: TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN THEATRE PERFORMANCE: MOVEMENT

The Department of Theatre and Film at the University of Winnipeg (www.uwinnipeg.ca) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Movement for the Stage at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position is designated for IBPOC and underrepresented theatre-makers, educators, and artists. Subject to budgetary approval, this appointment will be effective July 1, 2023 or January 1 2024. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Movement instructor who: is dedicated to inspiring student interest, with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate instruction; has expertise in one or more recognized methodologies for actor movement training that can concretely develop a young actor’s somatic awareness, physical articulation, and skills related to the embodied aspects of acting on the contemporary stage; has a strong professional artistic profile; and is a collaborator with the ability to contribute to a rigorous and diverse department that is in a process of renewal, seeking to reflect and contribute to the development of an inclusive theatre industry.

The University of Winnipeg is located in Treaty One territory, the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples and the birthplace and homeland of the Métis Nation. Winnipeg is home to a vibrant artistic community, to which the Department of Theatre and Film is proud to contribute through strong ties with local professional theatre.

The department’s facilities are housed in the Asper Centre for Theatre and Film and include a 155 seat fully reconfigurable theatre, a wide range of teaching studios with sprung floors, full technical facilities to support our robust production and stage management streams, as well as up-to-date infrastructure and equipment for our highly popular filmmaking program. Our faculty complement consists of twelve full-time members augmented with a number of Contract Academic Staff selected from the industry. Our department’s main commitment is to practical theatre and film making within a liberal arts context. Both B.A. and B.A. (Hons) degrees are offered through a range of streams of specialization in theatre, and we are one of Canada’s largest undergraduate programs offering this range of study. Our graduates can be found working in every aspect of theatre and film in Canada and beyond.

Winnipeg is a diverse city and the Department of Theatre and Film is committed to reflecting this diversity to our faculty. Our search is designated for IBPOC and underrepresented theatre-makers, educators, and artists who: have experience and knowledge of the theatre industry; approach theatre-making with an openness to a range of aesthetics and techniques that seek to expand the student-actor’s imagination and learning; and are committed to contributing to current and future advances in both the theatre industry and theatre pedagogy.

In the role of Assistant Professor, the successful candidate will:

  • Teach and supervise at the undergraduate level in the area of Movement for the Stage, with particular emphasis on instruction for students in the Honours Acting stream
  • Support movement/choreographic requirements for department productions
  • Assume positions of responsibility in the collegial governance of the department and the wider university
  • Contribute to the field of theatre through creative practice and/or scholarship

Qualifications:

  • Significant professional and/or academic creative experience
  • An active professional practice and reputation as a professional movement coach, choreographer, performer, director, or deviser whose work has been presented publicly for review in professional theatres and/or academic institutions
