VACANCY: PROBATIONARY POSITION IN FILM PRODUCTION
The Department of Theatre and Film at the University of Winnipeg (www.uwinnipeg.ca) invites applications for a probationary position in Film Production at the rank of Instructor. Subject to budgetary approval, this appointment will be effective July 1, 2020. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
We are seeking a professional filmmaker and teacher who is dedicated to inspiring student interest with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate instruction; has a strong professional filmmaking portfolio as a director and/or cinematographer which may include, experience as an editor or screenwriter; is a collaborator with the ability to contribute to a diverse department, reflecting the emerging trends in film, television, and new media; and has a strong range of approaches to narrative fiction.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach and supervise at the undergraduate level in the areas of film production and screen narrative technique. With an understanding of the entire film workflow from conception to completion, they will advise and mentor the artistic development of our students. The program complements the technical aspects of film with courses in Cinema Studies, developing our students’ ability to not only create images and cinematic narratives, but also understand the historical, social and theoretical frameworks in which they are formed. The successful candidate will be a key contributor in curriculum development within the Department of Theatre and Film, and will also assume positions of responsibility in the collegial governance of the department and the wider university.
The ideal candidate will have an MFA in Film Production, or possess equivalent professional creative experience. The candidate will have demonstrated excellence within their professional portfolio in a combination of filmmaking skills related to directing, cinematography, producing and/or post-production. Experience teaching film theory and film history will be viewed positively. Candidates must have a demonstrated capacity for teaching at the post-secondary or professional level and possess an understanding of best pedagogical practices within an intensely practical, diverse, liberal arts program that maintains high standards of both academic and practical rigour. Teaching or professional activity in other areas of film (such as documentary filmmaking) or theatre will be viewed as assets.
The University of Winnipeg has a vibrant Department of Theatre and Film which is fully engaged with the local professional communities. Our faculty complement consists of twelve full-time members augmented with a number of Contract Academic Staff selected from the industry. Our department’s main commitment is to practical theatre and film making within a liberal arts context. Both BA and BA (Hons) degrees are offered through a range of streams of theatre study, and we are one of Canada’s largest undergraduate programs offering this range of study. Our graduates can be found working in every aspect of theatre and film in Canada and beyond.
