Description:

#U13.19 DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND FILM

VACANCY: TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN PERFORMANCE STUDIES: ACTING

The Department of Theatre and Film at the University of Winnipeg (www.uwinnipeg.ca/theatre-film) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Performance Acting at the rank of Assistant Professor. Subject to budgetary approval, this appointment will be effective July 1, 2020. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative acting teacher who: is attuned to emerging ideas in acting technique and pedagogical practice and is dedicated to inspiring student interest with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate instruction; has skills in a range of approaches to performance; is conversant with best practices as they relate to intercultural exchange, equity, diversity and inclusion; has a strong professional artistic profile which will include experience in directing for the stage; and is a collaborator with the ability to contribute to a rigorous and diverse department that is embarking on an evolution of its performance offerings to better reflect the current and future trends in performance on stage, screen and in new media.

Our ideal candidate is someone with teaching experience in a coherent, process-oriented methodology. While Stanislavski’s principles underpin much of our program`s work, we aim to equip our students with experience in and working knowledge of many methodologies. We seek a future colleague who can draw from methodologies beyond Stanislavski and engage the students in the art of wrestling with both the connections and the apparent contradictions between various approaches. Skills in teaching acting from an Indigenous perspective are desirable. Significant performance or directing experience is desired. Additional skills in areas such as acting for the camera, dramaturgy, and/or the creation of new work would be considered assets. This position will be involved in the production season–coaching, directing, creation of projects, mentoring, for example. Strategies for connecting our students to the profession are also of interest.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and supervise at the undergraduate level in the area of acting and possibly also directing; direct undergraduate performances; participate in auditions for the incoming class of Honours actors each year; advise and mentor the artistic development of acting students while playing an integral role in curriculum development; assume positions of responsibility in the collegial governance of the department and the wider university. All full-time faculty positions have a research requirement for promotion and tenure and for those in practical areas of our department this most often takes the form of creative activity. It is therefore essential that candidates have demonstrated the ability to establish and maintain an active program of creative research through artistic practice in association with industry partners and/or funding agencies as evident from a notable creative profile as a professional performer, director or deviser whose work has been presented publicly for review.

The ideal candidate will have an MFA or PhD in Acting or Directing, or possess equivalent professional creative experience and a demonstrated excellence in their area(s) of specialization. Candidates must have a demonstrated capacity for teaching at the post-secondary or professional level and possess an understanding of best pedagogical practices within an intensely practical, diverse, liberal arts program that maintains high standards of both academic and practical rigour. Teaching or professional activity in other areas of theatre or film will be viewed as assets.

The University of Winnipeg has a vibrant Department of Theatre and Film which is fully engaged with the local professional communities. Our faculty complement consists of twelve full-time members augmented with a number of Contract Academic Staff selected from the industry. Our department’s main commitment is to practical theatre and film making within a liberal arts context. Both BA and BA (Hons) degrees are offered through a range of streams of theatre study, and we are one of Canada’s largest undergraduate programs offering this range of study. Our graduates can be found working in every aspect of theatre and film in Canada and beyond.

The province of Manitoba, and specifically the city of Winnipeg form the context for what and how we teach. Winnipeg’s population is increasingly diverse with a substantial Indigenous population, large and vibrant LGBTQ2+ community, and an active disability arts community.  We value this diversity within our Department.

Applications should include a cover letter briefly describing your teaching philosophy and research/creative interests, curriculum vitae, three letters of reference which need only include one academic reference. We highly value professional references, and other documentation relevant to this posting.

Applications must be submitted online via The University of Winnipeg’s online recruitment system. For details on how to submit your application, please visit our Human Resources website and under the Employment category, choose the Faculty Employment position vacancies option.

Candidates should arrange for the three letters of reference to be sent directly to Christopher Brauer, Chair, Department of Theatre and Film, thfm@uwinnipeg.ca.

Review of applications will begin January 31, 2020 and will continue until such time as the position is filled.

The University of Winnipeg is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and recognizes that a diverse staff/faculty benefits and enriches the work, learning and research environments, and is essential to academic and institutional excellence. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals and encourage women, members of racialized communities, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity to confidentially self-identify at time of application. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
