English, Theatre, Film & Media Position Advertisement
Position Numbers 29544 & 29545

The Department of English, Theatre, Film & Media, Faculty of Arts, University of Manitoba, invites applications for two full-time probationary appointments at the rank of Instructor I. The candidates will have:

• A PhD in English or closely related field
• a strong record of teaching at the first-year level;
• the ability to teach English literature and another area of department expertise
• a record of service preferably related to undergraduate matters;
• experience teaching in one or more delivery modes, including in-person instruction

The duties of this position are teaching and service. The normal teaching load is seven courses (21 credit hours) per year. Successful applicants will provide crucial first-year teaching by covering multiple sections of English 1200, our six-credit first year survey course. This course is required for all English majors and is the gateway to our upper-year courses. Additional courses in Theatre, Film, or Media may be assigned as required. These Instructors will also enrich our program through the diversity of the upper-year courses that they will occasionally teach. This diversity allows students to choose from a wide range of courses to satisfy their degree requirements.

The successful candidate will normally have a PhD by the time of appointment and must have demonstrated excellence in teaching. The appointment will begin July 1, 2021 or soon thereafter. The starting salary will reflect the qualifications and experience of the chosen candidate.

The person hired into the position will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary department with strong ties to and links with several centres on campus (Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture; Institute for the Humanities; Arts Media Lab). The University of Manitoba is located on Treaty One territory and the homeland of the Métis Nation, and the University hosts significant research activity in Indigenous studies, including the work of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

The University of Manitoba and the Department of English, Theatre, Film, and Media are strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from women, racialized persons, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of all sexual and gender identities, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
