Each year, the Canadian Association for Theatre Research (CATR) recognizes the accomplishments of its members and others with four awards honouring work of significant merit in any area of drama, theatre, or performance research in what is now known as Canada: the Richard Plant Award, the Jean-Cléo Godin Award, the Ann Saddlemyer Award, and the Patrick O’Neill Award.
Individual committees are tasked with surveying a range of recent publications, determining eligible nominations, selecting a winner, and writing the citation. To this end, CATR members and non-members interested in the field of drama, theatre, and performance studies in what is now known as Canada are strongly encouraged to email the Scholarly Awards Coordinators (catrscholarlyawards2@gmail.com) to nominate their own work or the work of others. Works such as those produced by smaller presses or non-Canadian journals may be considered. The authors do not have to be members of the Association.
Submissions must include the name of the award for which each nomination is to be considered, as well as the author’s name, the title of work, and (if applicable) the title of the journal or anthology. There is no need for a seconder or supporting documentation. Everyone, including CATR members and non-members, is strongly encouraged to self-nominate.
The submission deadline for the Ann Saddlemyer Award is January 15, 2023 and the deadline for the Richard Plant, Jean-Cléo Godin, and the Patrick O’Neill Awards is February 1, 2023. Nominations are sought for the following awards:
Richard Plant Award: Named in honour of one of the Association’s co-founders, this award is given annually to the best English-language article on a Canadian theatre or performance topic.
Jean-Cléo Godin Award: Honouring a founder of both this Association and SQET, this award is given annually to the best scholarly article or article focused on research-creation in French. This award honours work of significant merit in any area of Canadian theatre or performance research.
Ann Saddlemyer Award: Named in honour of the Association’s co-founder, the Ann Saddlemyer Award goes to the best book published in English or French in a given year. The winning book should normally constitute a substantial contribution to the field of drama, theatre, and performance studies in what is now known as Canada.
Patrick O’Neill Award: Honouring a respected editor and champion of the Association, the Patrick O’Neill Award is given each year to the best edited collection published in either English or French on a Canadian theatre and performance topic. The award is given in alternate years to a play anthology and an essay collection. For the 2023 award, play anthologies published in 2021 or 2022 will be considered.

Chaque année, l’Association canadienne de la recherche théâtrale (ACRT) récompense les réalisations de ses membres et de non-membres, dans ce qui est actuellement connu comme le Canada, en décernant les quatre prix suivants à des œuvres méritoires dans le domaine de la recherche sur l’art dramatique, le théâtre et la performance, soit le prix Richard Plant, le prix Jean-Cléo Godin, le prix Ann Saddlemyer et le prix Patrick O’Neil.
Différents comités sont chargés de repérer un nombre de publications récentes, de déterminer les candidatures admissibles, de sélectionner l’œuvre gagnante et de rédiger la citation. À cette fin, les membres de l’ACRT et les non-membres intéressés par les études sur l’art dramatique, le théâtre et la performance, dans ce qu’on appelle actuellement le Canada, sont invités à contacter par courriel les personnes responsables des prix d’excellence (catrscholarlyawards2@gmail.com) pour déposer une œuvre de leur cru ou d’une autre personne. Les œuvres, dont celles publiées par de petites maisons d’édition ou par des revues non canadiennes, sont admissibles. Les autrices et les auteurs mis en candidature ne doivent pas nécessairement être membres de l’Association.
Les dossiers de candidature doivent inclure le nom du prix pour lequel la candidature est déposée, le nom de l’autrice ou de l’auteur, le titre de l’œuvre et, le cas échéant, le titre de la revue ou du recueil de textes. Il n’est pas nécessaire qu’une deuxième personne appuie la candidature ni de fournir des documents complémentaires. Toutes et tous, membres de l’ACRT et non-membres, êtes fortement encouragés à déposer votre candidature.
Pour le prix Ann Saddlemyer, la date limite pour déposer une candidature est le 15 janvier 2023, alors que pour les prix Richard Plant, Jean-Cléo Godin et Patrick O’Neil, la date limite est le 1er février 2023. Des candidatures sont attendues pour les prix suivants :
Prix Richard Plant : Nommé en l’honneur d’un des cofondateurs de l’Association, ce prix est remis chaque année au meilleur article de langue anglaise traitant de théâtre ou de performance au Canada.
Prix Jean-Cléo Godin : Nommé en l’honneur d’un des cofondateurs de l’ACRT et de la SQET, le prix récompense chaque année le meilleur article savant ou le meilleur article sur la recherche-création de langue française. Il récompense des œuvres d’importance dans les différents domaines du théâtre ou de la performance au Canada.
Prix Ann Saddlemyer : Nommé en l’honneur d’une des cofondatrices de l’Association, le prix Ann Saddlemyer récompense le meilleur livre publié en anglais ou en français, au cours d’une année. Le livre gagnant doit normalement constituer une contribution importante aux études sur l’art dramatique, le théâtre et la performance, dans ce qu’on connaît actuellement comme le Canada.
Prix Patrick O’Neill : Nommé en l’honneur d’un éditeur respecté ayant contribué significativement à l’Association, le prix Patrick O’Neill est remis chaque année au meilleur ouvrage collectif, publié en français ou en anglais, traitant de théâtre ou de performance au Canada. Le prix est décerné en alternance à une anthologie de pièces de théâtre et à un recueil d’essais. Pour le prix 2023, les anthologies de pièces de théâtre publiées en 2021 ou 2022 seront évaluées.
