The Richard Plant, Jean-Cléo Godin, Ann Saddlemyer and Patrick O’Neill Awards

la version française suit:

Each year, CATR recognizes the accomplishments of its members and others in our field with a number of scholarships and awards.

Nominations for the Richard Plant Award, the Jean-Cléo Godin Award, the Ann Saddlemyer Award, and the Patrick O’Neill Award will be determined by individual committees. These committees are tasked with surveying a wide range of publications from throughout the calendar year. However, submissions of articles and books to be considered for these prizes are also welcomed from the full membership of CATR. We strongly encourage ALL those who interested in the field of Canadian Theatre and Performance Studies to let us know about work that has impressed them over the course of the year, especially work that may be ‘off the beaten path’ (for example, in edited collections or non-Canadian journals) and that deserves to be brought to committee members’ attention.

The awards honour scholarly work of significant merit in any area of Canadian theatre or performance research. The authors do not have to be members of the Association.

The deadline for all 2019 Scholarly Award Submissions is January 20, 2020. Submissions should include a brief email of support explaining for what prize the article or book is being nominated, but a seconder is not necessary. Members are also encouraged to consider self-nomination. Nominations / submissions of work to be considered for all awards should be sent directly to this year’s coordinator of Scholarly Awards, Dr. Roberta Barker (barkerr@dal.ca).

Nominations are sought for the following awards:

  • Richard Plant Award: Named in honour of the association’s co-founder, this award is given annually to the best English-language article on a Canadian theatre or performance topic.
  • Jean-Cléo Godin Award: Given annually to the best scholarly article in French, this award honours work of significant merit in any area of Canadian theatre or performance research.
  • Ann Saddlemyer Award: Named in honour of the association’s co-founder, the Saddlemyer Award goes to the best book published in English or French in a given year. The winning book should normally be broadly on a Canadian topic, and should constitute a substantial contribution to Canadian Theatre and Performance Studies.
  • Patrick O’Neill Award: The Patrick O’Neill Award is given each year to the best edited collection published in either English or French on a Canadian theatre and performance topic. The award is given in alternate years to a play anthology and an essay collection. For the 2019 award, essay collections published in 2018 or 2019 will be considered.
