Updated Message re: Accommodations in Halifax

Dear CATR 2023 In-Person Attendees,

I hope you are all doing extremely well.  I am writing to follow up with you about residence and hotel options for CATR 2023 in Kjipuktuk/Halifax. Session leaders, if you could please share this message with your session participants, just to ensure that they all receive it, that would be hugely appreciated!

First, although the deadline for booking from a guaranteed block of residence accommodations at Dalhousie has officially passed, I wanted to let you know that all of those residence options are still available to book on a first-come, first-served basis, and that the prices outlined in our initial email about residence options have not changed.

I’m very grateful to folks for letting me know this past weekend that the student prices were no longer appearing on the reservations page when you tried to book, and am extremely sorry for the stress this may have caused. I looked into the problem this morning, and discovered the steps by which you can still access all residence options for the conference, including the student discount:

  1. Go to stay.dal.ca

  2. Enter your preferred arrival and departure dates in the menu labelled “Start Your Booking”

  3. Enter your preferred number of rooms

  4. Under “Location,” enter “Halifax, Nova Scotia”

  5. If you would like to book the student discount, enter “student” into the box labelled “Promotion Code”

All available options for your preferred dates should then appear.  For students, single rooms are still available at both Howe Hall and Risley Hall (both within 5 minutes’ walk of the conference venue) for $37.50/night, as are double rooms at Howe Hall for $57.75/night for 2 people ($28.86/night per person) and some multi-room suites at LeMarchant Place for those who would like to book as a larger group. Non-students can book single rooms for $59.68/night, or double rooms for $85.25/night.

These prices will remain in place until the conference, as long as room availability lasts. If you are interested, however, please book as soon as you can. Accommodation space is in great demand in the city, and it is possible that the Dalhousie residences may get fully booked before the conference.

Again, my very sincere apologies to all CATR graduate student members for whom the disappearance of the student prices caused frustration and stress.  Please do let me know at barkerr@dal.ca if you run into any difficulties with the procedure outlined above. For those in need of financial support for travel to the conference, please note that information about our graduate student travel subsidy application is now available. If you are a graduate student or an emerging scholar, we also strongly recommend submitting for the Lawrence Prize. This $200 prize is awarded to a graduate student or an emerging scholar (PhD completed within five years) presenting a paper at this year’s conference. To be considered for the award, please email Jessica Riley, Chair of the Lawrence Committee, at j.riley@uwinnipeg.ca by Friday, May 13.

Finally, for those interested in booking rooms at the Lord Nelson or Prince George Hotels, please try to reserve your rooms before May 15, 2023, after which our guaranteed block of accommodations at those hotels will go back into general circulation. Please see our initial message about hotel options for all the details of how to book.

Thank you so much, everyone.  Greatly looking forward to seeing you in Kjipuktuk / Halifax!

Very best wishes,

Roberta
