Nina Lee Aquino, a Filipino Canadian, is a renowned director, dramaturge, and artistic leader. Her journey began as the inaugural Artistic Director of fu-GEN Asian Canadian theatre company (2002-2009), where she organized the first Asian Canadian theatre conference and edited a seminal anthology of Asian Canadian plays, alongside co-editing an award-winning book on the subject. She became Artistic Director at Cahoots Theatre Company (2009-2012) and Factory Theatre (2012-2022), leading to her current role as Artistic Director of English Theatre at the National Arts Centre.

Aquino's directorial work has garnered prestigious awards, including the Ken McDougall Award, John Hirsch Prize, Toronto Theatre Critics Award for Best Director, and three Dora Awards for Outstanding Direction. She co-authored the play Miss Orient(ed) and serves as an Adjunct Professor at York University. Additionally, Aquino was the President of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatre from 2018-2024. In 2019, she was honored with the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Margo Bindhart and Rita Davies Cultural Leadership Award.

Nina Lee Aquino est metteuse en scène de renom, conseillère dramaturgique et leader artistique. Canadienne d’origine philippine, elle débuta son parcours chez fu-GEN, une compagnie de théâtre consacrée au travail d’artistes canadiens d’origine asiatique. Elle en fut directrice artistique de 2002 à 2009. C’est durant cette période qu’elle organisa le premier colloque voué au théâtre canado-asiatique, qu’elle dirigea une importante anthologie de pièces canadiennes par des auteurs et autrices asiatiques, et qu’elle corédigea un livre primé sur le sujet. Elle fut ensuite directrice artistique de Cahoots Theatre Company de 2009 à 2012 et de Factory Theatre de 2012 à 2022. Elle assume actuellement la direction artistique du Théâtre anglais du Centre national des Arts du Canada.

Aquino a reçu de nombreux prix prestigieux pour son travail de mise en scène, dont le Ken McDougall Award, le John Hirsch Prize, le Toronto Theatre Critics Award pour la meilleure mise en scène et trois prix Dora pour une mise en scène exceptionnelle. Elle est co-autrice de la pièce Miss Orient(ed) et est professeure associée à l’Université York. Aquino a du reste présidé la Professional Association of Canadian Theatres de 2018 à 2024. La Toronto Arts Foundation récompensa son leadership culturel en 2019 en lui décernant le Margo Binhart and Rita Davies Cultural Leadership Award.
